Meet Megan Bedard: Whistler’s Up-and-Coming Mountain Bike Star
At just 18 years old, Megan Bedard is already making waves in the mountain biking world. Born and raised in Whistler, B.C., she’s got big goals, fast times, and the kind of fearless energy you’d expect from someone raised on world-class trails. We sat down with Megan to talk all things biking, Whistler, and what it means to be supported by a brand like Fairmont Chateau Whistler.
Let’s start with the basics. Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you got into mountain biking?
“Hi! I’m Megan Bedard, I’m 18 years old and just graduated high school. I’ve been mountain biking for about four years now. My brother was the one who introduced me—he kept taking me out with him and encouraging me to ride. We started out with WORCA (Whistler Off Road Cycling Association) and I remember climbing all the trails and then dragging my parents up there with me! My first real race season wasn’t until last year. Before that, I’d hit trails and just try to survive them—definitely had a few crashes! But last year felt like my proper race season, and I was really happy with how it went.”
What’s your connection to Whistler, and how has it shaped you as an athlete?
“Being born and raised in Whistler is something really special. The community here is amazing—everyone knows each other, and you build friendships just by being out on the trails. I’ve had the same group of girlfriends since I was three years old! The mountain biking scene here is also so strong. I ride mostly with the guys on the ZEP team, but we’ve got a good mix.”
How would you describe your riding style?
“I’d say my riding style is fun and flowy—I’m here to have a good time. I love catching air and hitting jumps. I can go fast when I need to, especially on race days when I get in the zone, but at the end of the day, it’s about enjoying the ride.”
If someone’s visiting Whistler for the first time with a bike, what’s your must-ride trail?
“If you’re capable and experienced, A-Line is a must. It’s iconic—a black diamond flow trail that’s world-renowned. I ride it almost every day, so I could probably do it with my eyes closed (don’t try that though!). Another favorite is Disco Boy at Lost Lake. It’s a super fun trail and has always been one of my top picks. Just remember—know your limits. A-Line might be a famous trail, but it’s not for beginners. Safety first!”
Do you have any trail etiquette tips for first-timers?
“Yes! If you’re on a black and riding slower, pull over for faster riders behind you—it’s just respectful and keeps things safe. On blue trails, the slower rider has the right of way. Also, always do a warm-up lap before going hard. And most importantly: have fun, explore, and don’t be afraid to try something new.”
What makes the terrain and community in Whistler unique for training?
“Whistler has everything—technical trails, flow trails, jumps, steeps—you name it. Training here gives you such a big advantage. I’ve ridden in a lot of different places, but Whistler’s variety prepares you for anything. Whether I’m racing in Fernie or traveling internationally, this terrain has set me up for success.”
And the community? “It’s next level. You’re constantly surrounded by talented riders, and it pushes you to be better.”
What does it mean to be supported by Fairmont Chateau Whistler?
“It means a lot. I’m super grateful to be sponsored by Fairmont—it’s helped me travel to races all around B.C. and even Worlds in Andorra. Fairmont does so much for the community, and it feels good to represent them, especially since I also work there. I’m not just a sponsored athlete—I’m part of the team. It’s really special.”
Why do you think it’s important for brands to support young athletes like you?
“It makes a huge difference. Living in Whistler is amazing, but it’s expensive, and not everyone has the resources to travel for races. Sponsorships like this show that companies believe in you and your potential. It motivates me to give it my all and makes me feel really supported—both financially and emotionally. It opens up opportunities that wouldn’t be possible otherwise.”
When you’re not on the trails, what’s your favorite thing to do (or eat!) at Fairmont Chateau Whistler?
“Portobello mac & cheese. Hands down. I don’t know what they put in it, but it’s so good. I would die for it! And when it’s sunny, hanging out by the pool is my favorite thing. It’s such a vibe.”
What’s next for you this season? What events are you looking forward to?
“I’ve got the Dunbar Series coming up—which includes four races in a month, including Nationals. I’m hoping to win Nationals and become the national champion! Then there’s Crankworx. I’ve applied for the Whip-Off event as a wildcard and I’ll be racing two downhills and the A-Line DH. If I place top five at Nationals, I’ll qualify for Worlds in Switzerland at the end of August. Then we might head to the U.S. for the U.S. Open, and possibly the World Cups at Lake Placid and Mont-Sainte-Anne. It’s a packed season and I’m beyond stoked.”
Where can people follow your journey?
“You can follow me on Instagram at @megan_bedard1. I’m on TikTok too, but Instagram’s where I’m most active. I post a lot there—race updates, riding clips, behind-the-scenes… all the good stuff!”
Final thoughts?
“I’m just so excited for what’s ahead. Crankworx is the best week of the year, and if I get into Whip-Off, I’m ready for the energy and the crowd. I’ve got an amazing community behind me—from my family to to coaches to the Fairmont. I’m just really grateful.”
Stay tuned as Megan continues to take on the season—and maybe even the world stage. Whether you’re visiting Whistler to ride or just want to soak up the mountain magic, keep an eye out… you just might catch a glimpse of her flying down A-Line, having the time of her life.
