Mirror Mirror in the Fall: Whistler’s Top 5 Fall Photo Spots
Legend says it’s impossible to take a bad photo in Whistler. We might have to agree. Any direction you point your camera you can find ruggedly natural mountain landscapes just waiting to be snapped and shared. Even a place this beautiful has certain times of year that the views somehow reach new heights of awe-inspiring beauty. Fall is one of those wonder windows, where Mother Nature ratchets the local beauty up to 11. Pack your bags, camera, pick up a pumpkin spice latte and go!
Lost Lake
Lost lake is a place that every visitor should find. Contrary to what the name may suggest, getting there is easy. Just a leisurely 15-minute stroll from the front doors of the Fairmont Chateau Whistler you can pick up a morning coffee from Portobello to venture to explore the forested shores and mirror-like surface of this local lake. From the parking lot, we suggest venturing up the right-hand side of the lake to the floating dock. It provides stunning reflective views of Whistler Mountain in the distance and is also an excellent place to enjoy a moment of quiet solitude. Don’t forget to take a photo while you’re there, or if time allows it would make a stunning watercolour painting.
Village Stroll
Whistler’s Village Stroll has a more laid-back feel in the fall months. There are some beautiful places to soak in the soft, fall sunshine as it filters through the golds and reds of the deciduous trees. This “Village in the Forest” was built to showcase the surrounding mountains, nature and sense of discovery. Whistler Village is meant to encourage meandering, exploration, and surprise.
Head to Village Gate Blvd and capture the iconic Inukshuk. The Vancouver Organizing Committee of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, selected the Inukshuk as the basis for the 2010 Winter Games logo. This traditional icon of the Inuit people is symbolic of openness, welcoming and strength. The human form inukshuk is inunngnaq. The inukshuk became a popular symbol in this region during the Games period. This large figure has been a popular photo opportunity since the day it was unveiled, at its surrounded by stunning tree colours during the fall months. You will not miss it if you drive by, or you can also walk around it as it’s near the visitor center.
If you stroll by the main viaduct of Whistler pedestrian village you’ll encounter beautiful fall foliage behind the Olympic rings. There’s plenty of space in front of it so you can get back far enough to capture the whole rings, trees and Whistler mountain in the back if you aren’t working with a particularly wide-angle lens.
If you walk towards North Boulevard you’ll find a stunning fall oasis with a small waterfall and a huge red maple tree.
Rebagliati Covered Bridge
Fitzsimmons Creek is a beautiful and huge creek that flows through Whistler Village. When walking from Whistler Village to the Upper Village, you will cross the remarkable, covered bridge that passes over the creek.
Lakeside Park
Jump on a bike and cruise the Valley Trail to find your own lakeside viewpoints. From the bay look towards mountains peaks, and capture 180 views of Backcomb all the way until Wedge mountain.
Insider tip: The rushes on the north side of Alta Lake look like golden fields of wheat at this time of year when you catch them at sunrise or sunset.
When the season unfolds, you don’t want to miss the fiery colours of fall striking against the lush greens of the evergreen forests and the whites of the mountain tops.
