With the Fairmont Chateau Whistler Golf Club opening in May 10 for the 2024 season, we caught up with our Director of Golf, Danny Long, to prepare for the season ahead. Tips for Conquering Mountain Golf

For first-time visitors and those accustomed to flat courses, Danny offers this advice: “You do not need to hit your driver off of every tee, it is much more important to place your tee shot in the right location then to hit it as far as possible, remember, we are true mountain golf.”

The Biggest Challenge

According to Danny “It’s more often than not that you won’t encounter a perfectly flat lie unless you’re on the teeing ground. Since the golf course is built on Blackcomb Mountain, the terrain naturally follows the contours of the mountainside.”

Danny states, “The most rewarding aspect is that once you are able to strike the ball nicely at Fairmont Chateau Whistler Golf Club, your game will be able to transfer anywhere.”

Planning Your Golf Trip to Whistler

Boasting incredible views of the Whistler Valley, the Fairmont Chateau Whistler’s Practice Facility, features a 10,000 square foot putting green, practice bunkers, and chipping and pitching areas. Nestled in the forest behind Lost Lake Park, the Practice Facility offers the opportunity to improve your skills with a “full length 3 tier double ended driving range with both a short game and practice putting green to work on every shot in the bag. We also have the only David Leadbetter Academy in Canada if you want to treat yourself to an amazing learning experience.” says Danny. Plus, all tee times include complimentary access to the course’s private Practice Facility.

4. Elevate your game.

Known for it’s naturally spectacular and challenging terrain, the course offers the only true mountain golf experience in the area, as it carves out of the slopes of the Coast Mountain range at the base of Blackcomb Mountain. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. in 1993, the course traverses creeks and ponds, and stands amongst ancient Douglas firs and granite rock. Not to mention, the 450ft of elevation gain throughout your game, making your ball fly even further! Get ahead of the game with an aerial view of the course before you play!

5. Silence is golden.

There’s something to be said about having the entire course to yourself. And, while that statement may not be entirely true, each hole on the course is uniquely laid out to create a sense of isolation from the next. “You cannot help but enjoy the calmness and appreciate not only the views but the wildlife that surrounds” says Danny. You’re more likely to spot some local wildlife, such as deer or a family of black bears on course, than you are to run into another group on the greens.
